How is hypertension defined?

“Hypertension” — a common disease in Thailand, is when the pressure in your blood vessels is too high (140/90 mmHg or higher) . It can be treated but often times has been overlooked and cause a serious situation.

High blood pressure usually develops over time. It can happen because of unhealthy lifestyle choices, such as not getting enough regular physical activity. Certain health conditions, such as diabetes and having obesity, can also increase the risk for developing high blood pressure.

The number of differences of blood pressure measures is frequently different when monitoring it at hospitals than the patient’s home in a reasonable amount of time. Many studies show that a person’s blood pressure can fluctuate when sleeping or waking up. During sleep (Asleep Hypertension), if there’s a high blood pressure, it is a more reliable indication of the risk of cardiovascular disease than blood pressure testing in a hospital. Thus,  experts has studied into the specifics of such risk groups and conditions to identify solutions. Here are what the numbers can show if a person has Hypertension and at what stage:

Normal – Systolic: below 140 mmHg. Diastolic: below 90 mmHg.
Hypertension Stage 1 – Systolic: 140-159 mmHg. or Diastolic: 90 -99 mmHg.
Hypertension Stage 2 – Systolic: 160-179 mmHg. or Diastolic: 100-109 mmHg.
Hypertension Stage 3 – Systolic: over 180 mmHg. or Diastolic: over 110 mmHg.
